Author Interview with Steve Finegan

Today I am interviewing Steve Finegan, author of Into the Mist: Silver Hand. Welcome Steve!

What was your latest epic win? Epic fail?

Epic fail, immediately followed by epic win: Allowing my golden retriever, Cooper, to somehow lock me out of the house, which left him inside with several bulging grocery bags just waiting to be pillaged. Freaking out about it. Then remembering that I gave a key to my neighbor in case I ever locked myself out. I patted myself on the back for days after. The laughable part was explaining to my neighbor that my dog locked me out of my house. (btw, unbelievable as it sounds, Cooper didn’t go for the food.)

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?
I got my start as a screenwriter, so naturally I’ve thought about that. Truth is, I pitched the concept for INTO THE MIST to a movie producer a four years ago, and he told me it’d make a great book. But there’s definitely a movie in it. If you read it, you’ll “see” that, or you should. My writing style is totally cinematic, meaning: I do my best to show (i.e., let the reader experience) everything with very little, if any, telling. My primary vehicle for doing this is the dramatic scene. I write scenes, and sequences of scenes, and acts. Simple. I get into scenes late and out early, and I cut, dissolve or fade between them, creating a logical narrative flow that doesn’t require narration. If the words get in the way, the cinematic flow breaks down. I suggest you read SILVER HAND and decide if I’ve accomplished my objective.

What is the last book you read?
Madeline Miller’s THE SONG OF ACHILLES

In three words describe yourself:
Light and shadow (like every mortal ever born)

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:
Is there an afterlife of any kind or is this it?

A quote you live by:
“Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make proud.”

I
f you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
Not sure I’d like to be a superhero, unless you count Gandalf and Merlin as superheroes.

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
The past. Classical Greece, Rome, Celtic-Roman Britain – for sure.

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?
Of course, book 2 of my INTO THE MIST series, BRINGER OF THE DAWN. I’m taking a break from writing to answers these questions. DAWN will complete the two-part series, but remain opened-ended enough to continue if that’s what I want to do. No spoilers. :)

Thanks so much for stopping by and answering my questions. Make sure to check out Steve Fineagan's book Into the Mist: Silver Hand (description below).

Into the Mist: Silver Hand by Steve Finegan-

Description: Thirteen-year-old Gabe Wrenn has always taken refuge in his imagination. Refuge from his hovering mom and bullying brother. Refuge from the smirks and stares of his classmates. Refuge from his epilepsy. But now his imagination seems to be running wild. And he can’t stop it. And the only person Gabe can confide in is a girl who thinks his "weird brain" is the key to unlocking the secret of the Brynmor Witch.

Author Interview With Ann Stampler

Today I have Ann Stampler, debut author of Where it Began, here on the blog!

What was your latest epic win? Epic fail?
Epic win: It's one in the morning and I come upon the last Pilot pen with any ink in it at the bottom of the last handbag I search, and I can keep writing.

Epic fall:  Clothing malfunction.  Think of the most embarrassing female clothing malfunction possible (hint: It involves the back of a skirt.) and being somewhat exposed but not realizing it until a total stranger tells you.  That clothing malfunction.  At a large public event.

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?
I love movies!  I'm a huge movie fan.  So if Where It Began could be turned into a movie without perverting the whole point of the book, I'd be happy.

What is the last book you read?
Jenny Han's "We'll Always Have Summer"

In three words describe yourself:
Oh no, summary!  Uh: No can do.  Bad at summarizing.  Defies brief description.  Experiencing mounting panic.  Into channeling characters. Loves her family.  Serious dog person. Deeply values compassion. Grateful for life.

Let me back up for a minute and explain this.  I'm American, but when I was a teenager, I spent a year going to school in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where we were regularly assigned to read and summarize passages.  I'd never done this before and I was slower at it than probably anyone in the history of summarizing.  I was used to being a very good student, but every time I faced an in-class summary, I started to panic.  So there you have it, I was traumatized at an early age.

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:
OK, this is kind of meaning-of-lifeish, but I'd like to know about the afterlife -- if, what, how, where?

A quote you live by:
Don't want to get boring as this is on my Simon-Pulse profile as well, but my quote is, "If not now, when?"

In Your Perfect World…
Serious: Peace, justice, health and love for everyone.

Less serious: Chocolate cake is highly nutritious and the basis of a sound diet.  My dog replaces his penchant for eating paper and bits of leather shoes with a craving for highly nutritious chocolate cake (which is no longer bad for dogs).  Airfares plummet to the point that transportation for weekends in Paris or Manhattan or Montreal or Prague is around the price of a pair of extremely nice socks. My husband and I take walks along the Seine every other weekend, when not renovating an Italian farmhouse or eating chocolate cake in romantic restaurants.  Writers block is banished for all eternity.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
Flying.  Absolutely no doubt about that.  I survived primary school by imagining myself levitating out of my seat and floating through the window, where I'd go and what I'd see.

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I'd like to be able to go back if I could change events in history.  There are some horrible events I wouldn't mind changing.  Although this would probably require a time machine plus superpowers.

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?
I'm finishing up my next novel, a new YA  for Simon Pulse, set in Los Angeles and concerning a tight, crazy friendship between two quite different girls and maybe a bit of a triangle..
Thanks so much for stopping by Ann! You can follow Ann on Twitter here and stalk her blog here. Don't forget to check out her book. Description below.

Gabby Gardiner wakes up in a hospital bed looking like a cautionary ad for drunk driving and lacking a single memory of the accident that landed her there. What she can remember, in frank and sardonic detail, is the year leading up to the accident.
As she takes us through her transformation from invisible girl to on-trend Girl Who Dates Billy Nash (aka Most Desirable Boy Ever), she is left wondering: Why is Billy suddenly distancing himself from her? What do her classmates know that Gabby herself does not? Who exactly was in the car that night? And why is Gabby left alone to take the fall?
Putting the pieces together will take every ounce of Gabby's strength. As she peels back the layers of her life, she begins to realize that her climb up the status ladder has been as intoxicating as it has been morally complex...and that nothing about her life is what she has imagined it to be.

Where it began comes out on March 6th.

Pure by Julianna Baggott Interview and Giveaway

Description: Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet, she thinks about what is lost--how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies.

The publisher has graciously agreed to send a copy of Pure by Julianna Baggott to one of you! Before that though enjoy this quick interview with Julianna Baggott the author of Pure.

A quote you live by: "I wish someone had told me, not that my life would be hard, but that it would be phenomenally rich. I wish someone had told me that through my own self-inquiry and my own unique experience, my empathy would deepen, my compassion would expand, my gratitude for being alive would be huge." I live by this quote because one of my four children is different in a very specific way -- one that will demand bravery. (Well, doesn't the world demand bravery from all of us?) And this quote is one that reminds me not only how to parent, but also how to live. Each of us has to embrace who we are and go forth.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? I suppose as I head into PURE's publication, I'd like to be bulletproof, in terms of criticism. It's a catch-22 with a lot of authors -- me included -- in that writing is something that sensitive types are often drawn to. We should lay it bare -- be emotionally honest and open -- and then be tough at the same time. I could cut myself off from reading all reviews, but writing is already so solitary that I don't think I could bear it. And so, yes, to be amid the gunfire and yet steeled in Kevlar. That.

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them? Fuse is Book II in the Pure Trilogy. It's staring at me at this very moment -- a dark ominous glare. I'm deep into edits and a little terrified.

Author Interview with Victoria Foyt

Today I have Victoria Foyt, author of Save the Pearl Part 1: Revealing Eden, and she has graciously answered some questions for an interview.

Victoria Foyt's debut novel, The Virtual Life of Lexie Diamond, a young adult fantasy
mystery thriller (HarperCollins) was Recommended by The Center for Children's Books, and received a five-star, must read rating from Teens Read Too: “Foyt has created a compelling character and an electrifying story that will hold readers until the last page.”

Born and raised in Coral Gables, Florida, Victoria attended the University of Miami, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in French and Spanish and German. She currently resides in Santa Monica, California. She loves reading--at least two or three books a month--movies, tennis, swimming, hiking, and lots of dark chocolate.

What was your latest epic win?
I managed to fly from Miami to Los Angeles only taking half a Xanax.

Epic fail?
When the plane landed, the passenger across the aisle congratulated me for making it.

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?
So many readers have enthusiastically said that Revealing Eden “will make a great movie!” that perhaps it may come true. Having made several films myself, I’m well aware of the pitfalls and would hope to have some input about the screenplay and casting, two vital components. That said, film is a very collaborative process, one I was happy to trade for the ownership of my solitary voice in a novel, and in the end, the novelist has to turn over the story to the filmmaking team. It would be very cool to see Bronson the hot jaguar man on screen!

What is the last book you read?
I read the 20th Anniversary Edition of Outlander by Diana Gabaldon while on vacation this winter. The publisher went all out with decorative, padded casing and a very pretty, useful red satin bookmark. I think the last book I read with so much finery was the Bible. Outlander is much juicer, though perhaps just as adventurous.

In three words describe yourself:
Passionate, disciplined, analytical.

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:
Is the universe contracting or expanding? I would sleep better at night if it were the latter.

A quote you live by:
“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.”- -The Buddha

Or as Henry David Thoreau put it: “You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”

In Your Perfect World…
The Golden Rule would universally rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
Foremost, having deep compassion for others.
Secondly, an inability to gain weight despite the copious intake of fatty foods or sweets.

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Off to Paris in the 1920’s to attend Gertrude Stein’s Saturday night artist salons, which Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso and other great artists frequented. What a great, moveable feast that must have been. And the flapper dresses were divine too.

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?
I’m currently writing Save The Pearls Part Two, Adapting Eden. If Eden Newman thought life and love challenged her in Revealing Eden, the stakes ratchet even higher in the next. Her journey takes her from oppressed, fearful girl to an alpha babe, or Jaguar Babe. She must fight to save those she loves against impossible odds, testing herself beyond her limits—in love and physical strength—while the countdown to humanity’s extinction continues. I’ll tell you, it has been a wild, exciting ride to be in her head!

I’m also working with Sand Dollar Press to expand the incredible, interactive site at SaveThePearls.com where fans have been posting their own “mating” videos or commenting about Eden’s blog posts. Seeing Eden, who is a gorgeous girl by today’s standards, despair over not being able to find a mate and facing death if she doesn’t, or watching her desperation as she secretly meets with her dark-skinned Coal boyfriend really captures her future world. Please check it out! The Facebook fan page for the book is:
https://www.facebook.com/SaveThePearls.

I love to hear from readers! Please visit me at VictoriaFoyt.com or at Facebook.com/VictoriaFoyt. You make it all worthwhile.

Thanks for visiting my blog! I have started reading Revealing Eden and it is so awesome, look for my review real soon!

Books by Victoria Foyt:

Revealing Eden: Eden Newman must mate before her 18th birthday in six months or she'll be left outside to die in a burning world. But who will pick up her mate-option when she's cursed with white skin and a tragically low mate-rate of 15%? In a post-apocalyptic, totalitarian, underground world where class and beauty are defined by resistance to an overheated environment, Eden's coloring brands her as a member of the lowest class, a weak and ugly Pearl. If only she can mate with a dark-skinned Coal from the ruling class, she'll be safe. Just maybe one Coal sees the Real Eden and will be her salvation her co-worker Jamal has begun secretly dating her. But when Eden unwittingly compromises her father's secret biological experiment, she finds herself in the eye of a storm and thrown into the last area of rainforest, a strange and dangerous land. Eden must fight to save her father, who may be humanity's last hope, while standing up to a powerful beast-man she believes is her enemy, despite her overwhelming attraction. Eden must change to survive but only if she can redefine her ideas of beauty and of love, along with a little help from her "adopted aunt" Emily Dickinson. Revealing Eden is on sale now. Click here to order it.

The Virtual Life of Lexie Diamond: Lexie Diamond loves her computer. She loves to surf the Web more than anything else--and to the exclusion of a social life. Beyond being just a computer geek, Lexie has developed a unique philosophy that the essential truth about life is found on the Internet, which she navigates with the expertise and finesse of a true believer. Then a tragic accident rocks Lexie's cyber-driven world and forces her to navigate the real world after all. With the aid of an unexpected ally--her first actual friend--not only is Lexie drawn into a mystery surrounding the accident, but she discovers more magic in the Web than she ever dreamed possible. Along the way Lexie's beliefs are challenged, her family is turned upside down, and her future is threatened. In this visionary tour de force by a promising new novelist, Lexie must decide what is real and what is virtual: Her life depends on it.

Author Interview with Rae Hachton

Today I have author Rae Hachton here on the blog!

What was your latest epic win? (a small but meaningful accomplishment like finding a bag of Bertie Bott’s while packing) Epic fail? (basically this is an embarrassing moment that you can laugh about)
Epic Win-This really kewl New & Used bookshop had the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe!!! at an amazing price—Score!
Epic Fail-I accidentally texted a guy I like a confession about him that I’d meant to text a girl-pal, so, embarrassed, and, since I’m a writer and reader of YA, I played it off as a book character I was telling an author friend about.

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?
Yes, Totally!! This would be epic! I’d love to see it on the Big Screen. I already have a dream cast and everything. I’d jump up and down if this ever, ever, happened.
What is the last book you read?
Cold Kiss by Amy Garvey—I really enjoyed this book.

In three words describe yourself:
Always finding stories.
I seem to find stories everywhere.

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:
What causes Deja Vu?I have frequent Deja Vu and I would really like to know why. I think this is interesting.

A quote you live by:
Anything is possible, especially the really, really impossible things. You should believe in those the most.

In Your Perfect World…
In my perfect world, everything would be magical. Dragon, Princes of Darkness, Medieval castles, teleportation, wizards, vampires, faeries, all of that.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
The ability to alternate/change time. Slow it down, speed it up, rewind it, rearrange events, travel to the past and view past events, all of that.

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Hmm. I would definitely not visit the past. I want to keep the past where it is. I’m really loving where I am right now, the future can only be better, so definitely, the future!!

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?
I am currently working on:
I’m halfway through Black Satin, the second book in the Pretty in Black series. I’m really loving it, there’s more magic in this one.
I will leave you guys with a few key words: Fire Breathing Gargoyles, flame arrows, Paris.France, Clock-work, and a race against time.

Author Interview with Kiki Hamilton

Hey guys, I read this book once about a faerie ring, a pick pocket, and the streets of London. I thought it was cool so I invited the author to an interview on the blog!!

Kiki Hamilton author of The Faerie Ring

Hi there! Thanks so much for having me on your blog!

What was your latest epic win? (a small but meaningful accomplishment like finding a bag of Bertie Bott’s while packing)

Beating my super-smart 28 year old nephew in Scrabble.  HAHA – still cackling over that win. J

Epic fail? (basically this is an embarrassing moment that you can laugh about)

Tripping over the last stair on an up escalator in the middle of a Nordies in Portland – not pretty.

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?

Yeah, that’d be cool.

What is the last book you read?

An ARC of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

In three words describe yourself:

Loyal, chocoholic, eclectic

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:

when am I going back to London?

A quote you live by:

A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence.

In Your Perfect World…

I would have enough time to do all the things I want to do, I’d play guitar like Keith Urban,  I’d sleep like a baby, I’d lose those last stinkin’ ten pounds and there’d be world peace. Of course.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Time-travel and magic. Always with the magic. J

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

I think always the past – so many unanswered questions, so many stories that haven’t been told or remembered.

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?

I’ve written the next book in THE FAERIE RING series and I’m waiting to see what my editor thinks. I just finished a YA contemporary and I’m waiting to see what my agent thinks and I’m halfway through a YA alternate history story with some steampunk-like twists that’s kind of fun. If only I had more time!! See question 8.

This was fun! Thanks again for having me on your blog!

xo
Kiki

Thanks for stopping by!! :)

Look for my review of The Faerie Ring later this week.

Author Interview and Giveaway

This post is dedicated to the awesomeness of Chelsea Fine, author of Sophie & Carter

So with out further ado or rambling let the Interviewing commence! *presses the big red button* Yep I went there.

What was your latest epic win? (a small but meaningful accomplishment like finding a bag of Bertie Bott’s while packing) Epic fail? (basically this is an embarrassing moment that you can laugh about)

I'd say my last epic win was this morning when I thought I was out of coffee sweetener (say it isn't so!) but then I found some vanilla caramel creamer in my fridge. Hollaaaa!

My last epic fail (and there are many) was probably this morning when I accidentally sneezed all over my computer screen. Yuck. *points at self* LOSER.

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?

Oh, I would love that! I think every author would. In my opinion, the biggest element a movie adds to a story (that you don't necessarily get while reading the written format) is the soundtrack. Music really draws emotion out of people, ya know? So I would love to see Sophie & Carter on the big screen with some great music playing behind them. :)

What is the last book you read?

Born At Midnight, by C.C. Hunter. It was awesome! I totally loved it. And I'm totally Team Lucas.  :)

In three words describe yourself:

Happy. Outgoing. Procrastinator.

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:

Will I ever finish the superhero book series I started writing three years ago?

A quote you live by:

"If you surrender to the wind, you can ride it." - Toni Morrison

In Your Perfect World…

Chocolate would make me skinny and caffeine would make me rich. :)

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Haha! Good question! :) Hmm...I would like to have the power to heal. Like Wolverine. I'd never get sick or break an arm or anything. I could be my normal, clumsy self and have no bruises. :) It would be awesome.

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Into the future, no doubt! I totally want to know what kinda crazy things we discover and invent in the next few centuries. And it would be so rad if we could travel to space as tourists someday, ya know? Like taking a bus tour through Rome or something...but instead of a bus, it would be a space shuttle...and instead of Rome, we'd go to the moon. That would be excellent!

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?

Yes! I'm starting a new paranormal series called THE ARCHERS OF AVALON. It's about two brothers in love with the same girl. This girl has been cursed to die, though, so they're on a mission to save her--and, of course, fight over her. :) The first book, ANEW, comes out this December. Whoo-hoo! I can't wait!

I can't either!! Thanks for joining me and answering my silly questions!! :D

Don't forget to check out my review for Chelsea's book Sophie & Carter here.

Because I love-love-loved this book so much I am giving a copy to one of you!!

just saying,

Jen Violi an author, a person who NEEDS a cape, and a musical writer

Today I am interviewing Jen Violi the author of Putting makeup on Dead People. I read and love love loved Putting Makeup on Dead People. To read my review click here.

What was your latest Epic Fail? (basically this is an embarrassing moment)

EPIC FAIL: The most recent I think would be attempting to very quickly relax and do some yoga, which involved slamming my shin into the coffee table in the process.  It was, I would say, a solid reminder to slow down and not approach relaxation as a quick-fix.  The subject of failure and being wrong has definitely captured my attention, most recently through an amazing TED talk from Kathryn Shulz (twenty minutes well spent—go watch it if you can). I think we underestimate the value of making mistakes, whether minor or epic.  And, I think this applies to writing.  The best stories are usually not ones about characters who make a long series of perfect and inspiring choices, but rather stories about characters who screw up and learn something and then work on making inspiring choices.  Epic fails, in fact, make great fiction.

[PEOPLE you should go check out that video its totally amazing!!]

Epic Win? (a small but meaningful accomplishment like finding a bag of Bertie Bott’s while packing)

EPIC WIN:  Using a random assortment of things in my refrigerator and freezer, I made chicken and dumplings for the first time.  What I used:  half roasted chicken from lunch at a local café, mushroom and black truffle soup I had in the freezer, some mustard greens, a few carrots, green onions, apple cider vinegar, flour, water, sea salt.  Seriously, food is epic for me.  I love experimenting and concocting things in the kitchen, maybe because the reward comes in the span of a few hours.  Often when I’m really involved in a writing project (like right now), I cook as a way to balance it out.  A book can take years to produce, but chicken and dumplings—created and consumed all in one night.

[MMMMM... I love food :)]

What are your thoughts on your book being turned into a movie?

I think it could be really fun to see Putting Makeup on Dead People as a movie.  I have loved movies for almost as long as I’ve loved books.  I’m sure it would also be weird to see someone else’s characterization of characters I created, but I would be eating popcorn and my book would have been made into a movie (!), so I think I’d be just fine.

What is the last book you read?

Flash Burnout by L.K. Madigan.  A beautiful, beautiful book, which I highly recommend.

In three words describe yourself:

Hyperbolic, Playful, Authentic

One question you wish you had a definitive answer to:

When will I get to hang out with Clarissa Pinkola Estés?  Women Who Run with the Wolves has enormously impacted my heart and mind and soul, and I would love to thank Dr. Estés for that in person.  I might even make chicken and dumplings for her!

A quote you live by:

I love so many words and groupings of words, it’s hard to choose!  One that’s particularly inspiring me at the moment is from the poem, “When I Am Among the Trees,” by Mary Oliver:  “You too have come into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.”  And maybe just one more, from Leonard Cohen’s song “Anthem,”:  “Ring the bells that still can ring.  Forget your perfect offering.  There’s a crack, a crack in everything.  That’s how the light gets in.”

[I love those quotes!]

In Your Perfect World…

Everyone will know and see the beauty in their unique, unrepeatable selves.  Also, I will have a retreat center on the Oregon coast where people can come to rest and rejuvenate and create.  And last but not least, a hot tub and a sauna will be involved.  In all of it.

[I like that, so many people don't see themselves as they really are :) ]

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Right now, some Mary Poppins clean-up-the-nursery power would be awesome.  So I guess what I’m saying is that I’d love to have a magical umbrella that would clean my bathroom or, that is, command my bathroom to clean itself.

[Confession: My room could use this too...]

If given a time machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

The way, way past.  I like to imagine that in another life, I was wearing a toga and was some kind of priestess.  So, I’d return to that time, first to learn how to properly tie a toga so it doesn’t fall off in the middle of a party and then also to check out all of the awesome rituals I was doing.

Do you have any projects in the works? If so can you tell us about any of them?

I am working right now on a new young adult novel, and I think I’m not ready to describe it yet.  I will say that I’m on draft seven and feeling good about its evolution.  In addition to about a billion books I want to write, I also have a half-finished musical that I declare will be completed in the next five years and produced on Broadway—how’s that for epic??

[You pretty much perfected the word epic. OOOOH! Secret project :) Also: HUGE fan of musicals!!]

Thank you SOOO much Jen for stopping by the blog!

*does happy dance*

and with that scary mental picture I leave you!!

just sayin,
-Kare
