Supernaturaly By Kirsten White

Description:

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.
So much for normal.

Report:

Tazey is Evie's trusty tazer in her favorite color, pink. I sculpted it because it's my favorite weapon and it's synonimus with Evie.

Supernaturally by Kiersten White

Wins:
  • I always have this fear, irrational really, when reading a sequel, because usually something bad happens. Fortunately in the book a lot of bad stuff happens, there is just a lot of good that counter acts the bad.
  • The world… I really love how White sets up the settings. They are all SO easy to see and beautiful really.
  • The creatures- no other author has presented such unique characters. Like who knew what a Fossilgrim was? Or a Slyth for that matter? Totally original!
  • Evie is just as kick-butt if not even more so now. Also: I was really able to relate to her stress and confusion (well not the snatch and grabbing of paranormals). She came out on new levels for me, deeper if that’s possible.
  • I liked the ending, of course there are a billion twists and turns that Evie has to suffer through to get there BUT what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
  • The Message: Your friends and family are ALWAYS the key to get back home. You are someone special.  Sometimes you have to do what is RIGHT.  The truth, though painful, is essential. Also: NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES EVER EVER EVER kiss a Fossilgrim.
  • Random Rant: Evie faces some awful trials, like trial after trial after trial after- oh you get the point! The thing is she learns from them and they make her stronger
  • The ever present humor of Mrs. White.

Fails:
  • Reth will forever be on this list… sorry me no likey!!
  • That person that does all the bad stuff… yeah I KNEW IT WAS THEM!!!

Overall:

This book offers a delightful giggle, a powerful punching message, and a world of amazement and awe. Let the record show that I wholly, entirely, fully, loved this book.

Kat, Incorrigible By Stephanie Burgis

Description:
Katherine Ann Stephenson has just discovered that she's inherited her mother's magical talents, and despite Stepmama's stern objections, she's determined to learn how to use them. But with her eldest sister Elissa's intended fiancé, the sinister Sir Neville, showing a dangerous interest in Kat's magical potential; her other sister, Angeline, wreaking romantic havoc with her own witchcraft; and a highwayman lurking in the forest, even Kat's reckless heroism will be tested to the upmost. If she can learn to control her new powers, will Kat be able to rescue her family and win her sisters their true love?

Report #1:

This is my sculpture of Kat's mirror. It originally belonged to her mother and has magical qualities.

Magical Places

Rants of Magical Proportions

When I was little I would always try and go to magical places. Usually I convinced myself I was there. As I got older these places turned into the places in books. Narnia or Hogwarts, it didn't matter as long as it was some cool place where magic lives.

You see I think we are all still looking for that place, that place we can escape to in our minds where things are magical and awe-inspiring. We still hope that these places exist, and by all means necessary we are going to prove they live on. We still shout "FOR NARNIA" in our heads or out loud when fighting for a good cause (admit it you do this!!) . We still hear a train whistle and hope we haven't missed the Hogwarts Express. These places do live on. They live on inside of us, in our heads, and they always will.

So what are my favorite 'places' to visit? Now that is a question I love to answer!

Hogwarts- forever and always

Narnia- I wander what it would be like to grow a book tree at the beginning of Narnia?

Olympus- Not just Olympus but camp half blood and all the other Percy Jackson places.

Panem- Katniss opens your eyes to all the glory of this world.

Divergent- A recent favorite but it's epic all the same.

Honest that's all of the ones I can name right now. In the comments leave your favorite worlds you like to escape to! I would love to hear all the 'places' you've 'been'.

The Magnolia League by Katie Crouch

Description:

After the death of her free-spirited mother, sixteen-year-old Alex Lee must leave her home in northern California to live with her wealthy grandmother in Savannah, Georgia. By birth, Alex is a rightful, if unwilling, member of the Magnolia League, Savannah's long-standing debutante society. She quickly discovers that the Magnolias have made a pact with a legendary hoodoo family, the Buzzards. The Magnolias enjoy youth, beauty and power. But at what price?

As in her popular adult novels, Crouch's poignant and humorous voice shines in this seductively atmospheric story about girls growing up in a magical Southern city.

Wins:
  • Confession: I almost gave up on this book. I began to read it and was not very happy with the main character Alex. I decided to plunge through and found that I rather liked it.
  • Magical forces and what-not, Hoodoo style!! I loved the way Crouch goes about explaining in detail how it works.
  • Alex was a very unique character and I grew to love her. For the most part she was her own person and didn't follow the rules of society.
  • The secrets and mystery that’s soaked the Magnolia Leaguers. Sometimes I was so confused about who the bad side was, but with power like that your bound to cross lines.
  • Thad- I thought he was brilliant. A bit snobbish at first but he redeemed himself later on. Also: He was super smart in a Nerdy but cute way.
  • The Georgia setting- Now that I live here I have found a million and three books that are set in Georgia (Woot Go Ga!!)
  • Dexter- he was the most real character. I loved how he and Alex were the perfect friends. Also: Go Waffle House!!

Fails:
  • Alex had some inconsistencies in her character. She was supposed to be all feminist-stubborn girl but she got lost in the power maybe and stopped being THAT.
  • Why I almost gave up on this book: Mainly Reggie. He was a jerk and pulled on Alex’s stings. He was a low life in more then one way.

Overall:

I am glad I didn’t give up on Alex. She showed me a fancy world full of magic and choosing which side you play for.

Read-a-thon Updates: Day 2

Update #6

I love this kid's enthusiasm don't you?!

GOOD MORNING!! *waves*

Kare: I finished Wintergirls last night!!!! It was really good. So my page number total is now at 290. *throws copious amounts of glitter* I am going to start If I Stay by Gayle Forman.

Dallin: In some guys backyard pretending to camp.

Min Challenge:

Super Team up

Gwen from Nevermore and Conner from Something Like Fate. Conner is really nice and artistic and Gwen is funny and spontaneous. They are both good friends to the people they know, even when no one else will talk to that person. Also: They both see the world as glass half-full. I think they make a cute couple.

Update #7

haha looking at the glass half full :D

Kare: I have read 11 pages from If I Stay. My grand total is now up to 301. Um I may or may not have fallen asleep again.

Dallin: Lost in the void of time and space after he was hijacked by aliens.

mini challenge: Required reading that isn't so bad.
First I will entertain you with a rant. I think students should be allowed to pick what books they want to read. At least ONE book a year should be one of the students choice that way they learn to love reading for what it is. end rant. With that being said I would love to see Sorta Like A Rock Star by Matthew Quick as required because it shows hope and a positive attitude. We could all use some more positive in our lives right?

Update #8

This kid is my hero!

Kare: My grand total is 333. No joke. I am still reading If I Stay :D

Dallin: Home but he is dead like a dog. He might join in on the reading fun later but for now he is kicking old school preschool style with a nap.

Mini Challenge:
Well to be honest if you asked me two months ago I would have said it doesn't matter. Now? It matters. I like them in ABC order according to author. That's pretty much the only way series can stick together. And if they aren't together I can't admire the way they look together from afar.

Update #9

CAKE!!!

Kare: DEFEATED!! My brain won't let me read!! I read maybe 10 whole pages. I am on page 55.

Dallin: He has picked up Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. No idea what page he is on. *shrugs*

Update #10

Odd man out. Be original.

Kare: No further reading. Sorry

Dallin: Is on page 258. That brings his total to 525. SMOKED!!

Mini Challenge:
Uh the only book I have read is Wintergirls BUT luckily it was pretty inspiring, inspiring as in its message was PROFOUND. :D

Update #11

Fear her.

Kare: I know I know. I sort of gave up. For some reason I just can't read. Oh and I feel asleep again :P

Dallin: Dallin is on page 315. His grand total is 582 or something like that.

Mini Challenge:
I would love to live in the world of Harry Potter. I mean come on HOGWARTS!!! Need I say more? Also: they have magic!!

just sayin,
-Kare
