On The Bright Side is Out Now!

Book: On The Bright Side by S.R. Johannes
Publisher: Coleman & Stott
Description: Gabby is a disgruntled tween angel who has just been assigned to protect her school nemesis and ex-beffie. Problem is her ex-beffie is dating Gabby’s longtime crush. Instead of protecting Angela, Gabby pranks her (since when is sticking toilet paper to her shoe or spinach in her teeth a sin?) Soon, Gabby gets out of control and is put on probation by her SKYAgent, who has anger management issues of his own. Determined to right her wrongs, Gabby steals an ancient artifact that allows her to return to Earth for just one day. Without knowing, she kicks off a series of events and learns what can happen when you hate someone to death.

Praises for Untraceable

"Grace is a spunky, independent, nature girl who doesn't need a boy to save her. With wilderness survival, a juicy love triangle, and more twists and turns than a roller coaster, this fast-paced novel had me holding my breath until the very last page—and still begging for more!" -Kimberly Derting, author of the The Body Finder series (Harper Teen) and The Pledge series (S&S)

"This thrilling story is a dramatic entanglement of mystery, deception and teen romance. The action flows like a brisk mountain stream interspersed with rapids, holding suspense to last page." - Kirkus Reviews

2009 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Quarterfinalist (under the original title of Grace Under Fire) - Judges Reviews:

"This story starts out with a bang...it reads like the young woman were narrating it to a friend, and had the ring of a young person's style and intensity. Grace sees authority people, or at least those she knows, as a bit bumbling, which is true to age. Authentic representation of youth in action also. Original in premise and style, and good use of background...Good story!" - Sue Grafton, author of bestselling Kinsey Milhone series

"This murder mystery features a teenaged heroine, but she has the self assurance of a woman twice her age. The prose is very descriptive...and the dialogue is genuine. The setting of small town North Carolina and the surrounding woods is appealing. The story moves along at a brisk clip, and it feels as if we already have some important clues. We look forward to seeing what's in the case file and what Grace and her motorbike, Luci, will be up to next." - Sue Monk Kidd, author of Secret Life of Bees

Praises for On The Bright Side

"S.R. Johannes delivers a cute paranormal thrill ride for middle graders! Even in death there is a BRIGHT SIDE!" - Addison Moore, author of the bestselling Celestra series and soon to be TV show

Clever and charming, ON THE BRIGHT SIDE is the story of a reluctant guardian angel, her still-breathing crush, and the frenemy she’s assigned to protect. A great read! -Suzanne Young, author of A Need So Beautiful, A Want So Wicket (6/12), and The Program (2013)

“ON THE BRIGHT SIDE is both hilarious and heart-warming – a tale that’ll have you hoping that there really *are* spunky and determined angels like Gabby who’ve got our backs.” - Kristin O’Donnell Tubb, author of Selling Hope & The 13th Sign (2013) (Feiwel & Friends)

"With a smart, snappy heroine and a heart-warming crush, ON THE BRIGHT SIDE is a page-turning new take on guardian angels that left me begging for a sequel!" - Gretchen McNeil, author of Possess and Ten (9/12) (Balzar + Bray)

If I Ran a Book Club...

Top Ten Books I Think Would Make Great Book Club Picks

I must start this off saying I wish I could start a book club, a YA book club. I was in one in high school but all we ever talked about was Twilight...you can tell how far we got with this group. So I've been thinking about this weeks topic and what books I would choose. I wanted some to be fun and a joy to read while others are filled with lessons and real life. Hope you enjoy the list!

Fracture by Megan Miranda

Description: Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine  —despite the scans that showed significant brain damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it? Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening? For fans of best-sellers like Before I Fall and If I Stay, this is a fascinating and heart-rending story about love and friendship and the fine line between life and death. (for more info click here

Epic Wins:

  • Psychological thriller? Heck.Yes. The author leaves no down time, continually throwing the plot this way and that. I have never read anything close to measuring up to this. That being said Megan Miranda has flawlessly created a hole in my head.
  • I sat there minuets after reading this book trying to piece my brain back together. Seriously, could you fetch that piece, yeah the one right over there...
  • Delaney- She was crazy. I mean you have to be some-what insane after you died and came back again. Her voice was easy to settle into and understand. Though her head was slightly unscrewed she was smart.
  • Decker- Their relationship/friendship was tense. Every time they got close something ripped them a part, more like tore them a part. Decker had this casualness about him and they even had witty banter (when they weren't avoiding death/crying/screaming).
  • The itch and pull of the brain- This was such a weird concept to wrap your head around. How do you scratch an itch inside your brain? The way her brain kept pulling her to places you just wonder how that would feel.
  • Message 1- Contemplating the question: What would you do do if you knew when someone was going to die? What, in fact, is the right solution to that problem? Ending there suffering as soon as possible or encouraging them to live one perfect day?
  • Message 2- Communication. You see this in books all the times. The main characters just don't communicate. Don't slip into silence, just talk about it. Delaney and Decker refused to talk or even possibly mention the fact that they had feelings for each other. A lot would have happened differently if they had communicated just a little.
  • Message 3- Things happen sometimes that we don't understand or can't explain and we just have to make the best of the situation.
  • Message 4- Life is short, don't take it for granted. Ask your self often if you only had one day left to live what would you do? Then go out and do it.

Epic Fails:
  • Troy- Some people are crazy but Troy takes the cake. That being said I do think it was essential for him to be a part of the story, to share his knowledge and experiences. It was so important for him and Delaney to become friends because they were both going through the same odd predicament.

Overall: If, in anyway, you can get a copy of Fracture in your hands- DO IT! It was an epic, mind-blowing experience that I won't soon forget.

Since I missed this one... Top Ten Books I'm Excited To Read in 2012

  1.  Welcome, Caller, this is Chloe by Shelley Coriell- I don't know why but this type of book speaks to me, I am so excited to read it!!
  2. Tokyo Heist by Diana Renn- Um a girl has to figure out who stole a famous painting? I'm sold!
  3. Bad Hair Day by Carrie Harris- This would be the second paranormal series (not sure if it's actually paranormal or sci-fi-ish...) I make an expection for. Kate is so flawlessly funny I can't wait to jump into her brain again
  4. Keep Holding On by Susane Colasanti- I read one of Susane's books last year and fell in love with her writing so I can't wait to get a hold of a new one!
  5. Insurgent by Veronica Roth- Self. Explanatory.
  6. 52 Reasons to Hate My Father by Jessica Brody- Rich girl forced to work for once in her life? Yep I'm in.
  7. Endlessly by Kiersten White- Again this one speaks for it's self. It's one of the only paranormal series I make an exception for... and that is HUGE.
  8. League of Strays by L.B. Schulman- I was pretty much sold by this line in the summery "...sinister mission to seek revenge against the bullies..."
  9. The List by Siobhan Vivian- I'm intrigued by The List. It sounds like one of those books that really out lines teens lives accurately. I guess we'll see
  10. Lies That Bind by Lisa and Laura Roecker- haha because I'm not obsessed about this series or anything...

Willow by Julia Hoban

Description: Seven months ago, on a rainy March night, sixteen-year- old Willow's parents drank too much wine and asked her to drive them home. They never made it - Willow lost control of the car and her parents died in the accident. Now she has left behind her old home, friends, and school, and blocks the pain by secretly cutting herself. But when Willow meets Guy, a boy as sensitive and complicated as she is, she begins an intense, life-changing relationship that turns her world upside down. Told in an arresting, fresh voice, Willow is an unforgettable novel about one girl's struggle to cope with tragedy, and one boy's refusal to give up on her. (click here to learn more)

Epic Wins:
  • Willow- I know when you think about a person who cuts you don't think funny, smart, or vibrant. You think dark, solem, and depressed. Willow had her dark times but outside of those times she was... vibrant!
  • Guy- He was so patient, thoughtful, and sweet. He cared for Willow so much despite her coping mechenism. I really like this guy (pun INTENDED).
  • The narration was cool, it wasn't Willows point of view but her thoughts, feelings were interjected a lot.
  • The idea that people suffer whether you care to notice or not. Some people suffer in silence while others are more profound so never assume someone is just fine.
  • This is pretty much irrelevant to the story but at each chapter there were scratch marks as a design. As you got to the end they decreased until they were gone.
  • She was a book nerd. Yep she is one of us! She even worked in a library, the place she met Guy.
  • This book really opened my eyes and showed me that not everyone who cuts is just a weirdo out for attention. I admit it, yes, I was one of THOSE people. The people who assumed those sort of things. It never struck me that maybe they are just normal people who have been through tough times.

Epic Fails:
  • There is a sex scene towards the end.

Overall:
Willow = Vibrant. If nothing else remember that. We never know someones situation and judging them based on their means to cope is wrong. Though I don't agree with her methods I know Willow has taught me to NEVER assume you know why people do what they do.
