By the time you read this I'll be dead by Julie Anne Peters

Description:

Daelyn Rice is broken beyond repair, and after a string of botched suicide attempts, she’s determined to get her death right. She starts visiting a website for “completers”— www.through-the-light .com.

While she’s on the site, Daelyn blogs about her life, uncovering a history of bullying that goes back to kindergarten. When she’s not on the Web, Daelyn’s at her private school, where she’s known as the freak who doesn’t talk.

Then, a boy named Santana begins to sit with her after school while she’s waiting to for her parents to pick her up. Even though she’s made it clear that she wants to be left alone, Santana won’t give up. And it’s too late for Daelyn to be letting people into her life…isn’t it?

National Book Award finalist Julie Anne Peters shines a light on how bullying can push young people to the very edge.

Epic Wins:

  • The Message: That there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
  • Santana: He is a dork. A funny, cute and sometimes annoying flirt. He has a pet rat (he is soooo lucky!!). He also has a secret but if I tell you I would ruin a part of the book.
  • The ending: Just the way I hoped…
  • Humor: Funniest suicide book I ever read, honestly!
  • Daelynn: She has attempted and failed suicide like three times. Due to her last attempt she is now mute and has to where a neck brace and is on suicide watch 24/7. Her past was hard and rewriting it is making her put her choice in stone. You discover why she wants to go so bad. Except now she is making a friend and meeting a guy that she tries so hard not to fall in love with. She is questioning herself; do I really want to go?

Epic Fails:

  • The book Daelynn reads: It is like an adult romance, I wouldn’t read it and I don’t know if any a teen would. Plus it wasn’t a very clean book, basically I skipped over it. I hate the fact that Daelynn idolizes the main character.
  • Her doubt of Santana’s intentions: She just assumes all he wants is sex, not that I blame her with her past but she won’t even believe him when he tells her the truth.
  • Her locking out of everybody: She doesn’t trust anybody, and I understand why. What I don’t get is why she is locking her parents out and Emily, the first friend she has made in a while. Locking Santana out I understand to a certain point then I wonder why is she hurting herself like this?

Overall:

This book opens a window into the life of a suicidal girl. The way they think and why they act how they do. Never assume that they are weak for not dealing with their problems, you have no idea what is going on in their head. Though I don’t agree, religiously, with suicide I also don’t think the people who are headed down that road shouldn’t be ignored! If you think somebody is headed down that road, help them. That’s all Daeylnn needed to realized that life isn’t all bad. Another note: don’t cause it that is the worst you could do. Everybody needs to accept and love each other otherwise there is no cure to suicide. This book was a powerful read. (the funniest suicide book I ever read… that just sounds wrong!)

Nobody’s Princess by Esther Friesner

Description:

She is beautiful, she is a princess, and Aphrodite is her favorite goddess, but something in Helen of Sparta just itches for more out of life. Not one to count on the gods—or her looks—to take care of her, Helen sets out to get what she wants with steely determination and a sassy attitude. That same attitude makes Helen a few enemies—such as the self-proclaimed "son of Zeus" Theseus—but it also intrigues, charms, and amuses those who become her friends, from the famed huntress Atalanta to the young priestess who is the Oracle of Delphi.
In Nobody's Princess, author Esther Friesner deftly weaves together history and myth as she takes a new look at the girl who will become Helen of Troy. The resulting story offers up adventure, humor, and a fresh and engaging heroine you cannot help but root for.

Epic Wins:

  • I must address the issue of Greek myth awesomeness!!! I love, love, loved Percy Jackson because it was a mix of Greek myth awesomeness and modern day life. (I know you are asking yourselves what has that got to do with this book?) Honestly, nothing but GMA. So now you know that I love GMA. This book is rooted in GMA. :D you can assume that I loved it.
  • The MC: I loved Helen because she wanted to be tough and be a princess (more so the first). She had such determination it couldn’t be held down. She wasn’t your cookie cutter princess, the lost and confused I need a prince to save me type, she held her own.
  • Always something happening. If she wasn’t learning to ride a horse or dressing like a boy, she was sneaking away from her guards or learning to hunt.
  • The cover!!! I thought it was really cool looking. (also, sadly, a fail)
  • Atalanta: A cool Greek woman Helen meets. She is very much a hunter/warrior and happens to be a princess. Her story is very interesting. Best role model/friend a girl could have.
  • Eunike- Another character that I adored. She’s the Oracle of Delphi and a great friend. There are only so many people Helen considers friends and I’m glad she is one of them.
  • MILO- He is the potential love story. A slave freed by Helen herself. They are only friends right now but I predict more for the future.
  • The Cliff-hanger- Gah! I hate these but they are what keep you hanging on to the story. I advise you to have the second book close at hand. I don’t and I wish I did.

Epic Fails:

  • The story was slow. Not to compare literature (something I feel is as bad if not worse than rating a book) in the Percy Jackson series everything is go, go, go. In this book everything took too much time.
  • No love story (YET!!!). This was probably due to the age, by the end she is only fourteen but she is ten for most of the book. The author was trying to recreate Helen’s life, slightly like her diary, so it started at a young age. (this is why I am hanging on for the second book)
  • The adventure stuff hasn't really started; I guess it was more of a starter book. You need the background to understand the other stuff later.
  • The cover shows Helen a lot older then fourteen, she almost look sixteen or seventeen. Slightly misleading. (She is suppose to be tall but she is also suppose to be stick-thin, almost lanky. The girl on the cover wasn't lanky, she was normal.)

Overall:

I enjoyed this book it was the kind of book that was slow but interesting. I love GMA ( my new acronym for Greek myth awesomeness) and for anybody who enjoys it as much as me take comfort in knowing this is an amazing book! (GMA ROCKS) :D

This week on my blog:

just sayin,

Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Description:

At fourteen, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything about the world around him. Streetwise, tough and savvy, his quick sarcasm is the stuff of legends. . .until the night when his best friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious warrior who has more fighting skills than Chuck Norris, Nick is sucked into the realm of the Dark-Hunters: immortal vampire slayers who risk everything to save humanity.

Nick quickly learns that the human world is only a veil for a much larger and more dangerous one: a world where the captain of the football team is a werewolf and the girl he has a crush on goes out at night to stake the undead.

But before he can even learn the rules of this new world, his fellow students are turning into flesh eating zombies. And he’s next on the menu.

As if starting high school isn't hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chainsaw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

Epic wins:

  • The sheer hilarity! I (as you know if you have read any of my reviews before) love to laugh; I especially love to read books that make me laugh. When the whole world was crushing down on him Nick could still make a joke as he sliced through a couple of zombies.
  • The paranormal factor. Zombies, demons, vampires, werewolves you name it, it was probably mentioned in this book.
  • Nick is very much a sarcastic guy. His street smarts keep him in trouble. He is dirt poor but has heart worth more than all the gold in the world.
  • Tricky, twisty roller coaster. No crying, just intense action jam packed into so few pages and tidbits of romance to ease the longing for a love story.
  • The book only takes place over two days.
  • Very fast read, the quick pace and funny nature allow you to blow through the pages.
  • The reasons to read this book are infinite (ha ha ha)

Epic Fail:

  • The point of views. Typically YA fiction is 1st person but Infinity was crazy. At the start of one paragraph you are Nick and by the end of it you have traveled through another character and on to the narrator. Pretty confusing to me.

Overall:

Clearly the good out was the bad (like it should). Nick has to battle the good and bad lurking inside him, but in the end what power will he fall to?

I loved this book to infinity and beyond!

Fairies, Flames, and tazers! OH MY!

Today [yes just a few short hours ago] I was had the HONOR , nay, the privilege to meet three incredible authors!
1) The ever amazing Kiersten White who wrote Paranormalcy
2) The sweet and knowledgeable Sophie Jordan (Firelight)
3) And last but not least the cute one (who writes only while she is pregnant) Aprilynne Pike (Wings and Spells)

I didn't, unfortunately, have anything for Aprilynne to sign so I didn't get to talk to her and I sort of froze up at Kiersten (she was the reason I drove to the signing). By the time I got my courage up I was at Sophie. She was incredibly relaxed and down to earth (can't wait to read her book!!!) . It was fun getting to talk to her.

Pictures:

The bookstore that hosted the trio's signing

Sophie's signature in MY book!!!! :D she left the post it!

Kiersten's signature is so bleeping funny! ( that was not a curse word!!)

Some amazing swag I picked up!

Unfortunately i was a total nutcase and forgot to take pictures of or with the author (who does that??!). Anyways I had a bomb-digity time and they were all so funny and down to earth, loved it!

Who am I digging in history: Nightingale's Passion

I love reading (well no duh!) but not just fiction. I have this thing for history, I love everything about history. I am an avid listener of the podcast Things You Missed in History Class on How Stuff Works. They do all kinds of podcasts about history. There are all kinds of interesting topics (OK so it's interesting to me, the history buff! the one who is taking western civ as an elective). Knowledge is power I say! (don't give me that look I said I was an EPIC BOOK NERD, I won't leave history out of the 'book' category).

So after reading Wildthorn , where Lou mentions a certain influential nurse, I decided my love for history and books has to collide on my blog some time. So I am starting a People in history-kind-of-thing. I really don't know where I am going with this but I have to share my love of history and those who made it possible.

For my intro to nursing class I had to create a power point that described the life of one Ms. Florence Nightingale. The project was actually very entertaining. Florence is now one of my new favorite people in history. I loved everything about learning about her but the one thing that stood out to me was her Passion. She loved to take care of people, see to their  needs while they were ill. She didn't care about the money or the glory, it was about the people. She established many of the principals that we now call mandatory for hospitals. In a time when being a nurse was frowned upon , this lady rose up for what was right. I love learning about people's passion and seeing there love for that passion glow from there face!

What makes you tick? What is your greatest passion? What will you do to change the world or somebodies world?

I want to know so just comment what your Passion is and why and what you're going to do about it.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

Description:

In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

Epic Wins:

  • The ZOMBIES that are sweeping the nation! They are creative infectious disease. I have never read about zombies but Ryan paints them in a way that makes you fear them. In this case that is a good thing.
  • I (as you will find) am a solid lover of the dystopian/ post-apocalyptic genre and this book is far from a disappointment
  • Mary is strong. She is an extraordinary fighter with good aim. Her passion to find the ocean drives the story.
  • Never a dull moment. The zombies never stop trying to attack and they are always trying to escape. Just when things start to get better the ruckus starts up again!
  • The romance between characters is giddy-making. BUT it’s also an epic fail, which you will understand if/when you read it.
  • The cover is AMAZING!

Epic Fails:

  • Everybody dies, well almost everybody. It’s horrible and sad but necessary to understand the world Mary lives in.
  • Mary is so wrapped up in the world outside her village she is blind to what she has in front of her. She keeps pushing, pushing so hard that she becomes the reason people around her are dying. The reason she loses the only ones who love her is her inability to deal with the world she has, she has to see the ocean and nothing, not even the unconsecrated, will stop her.
  • Not a big fan of the sisterhood. Ignorance is bliss but knowledge is power. The sisterhood strips Mary’s village of all their power leaving them only with fear.

Overall:

I loved this book, it’s like modern Shakespeare, everybody dies but the message remains strong. You cry, cringe, and hope with Mary and her world as it all comes crashing down.

Wildthorn by Jane Eagland

Description:

Seventeen-year-old Louisa Cosgrove longs to break free from her respectable life as a Victorian doctor's daughter. But her dreams become a nightmare when Louisa is sent to Wildthorn Hall: labeled a lunatic, deprived of her liberty and even her real name. As she unravels the betrayals that led to her incarceration, she realizes there are many kinds of prison. She must be honest with herself - and others - in order to be set free. And love may be the key...

Epic Wins:

  • Great Idea: LOVED the concept and the way the author illustrates it.
  • Vivid descriptions- The way the pain of the main character is described you really feel as if you are there experiencing it.
  • Turns that keep you guessing: You have to keep guessing who throws her into the Wildthorne mess and why or if it was just a misunderstanding.
  • Writing was great: The author creates this world in your head, it is truly amazing.
  • I loved MC’s passion: Lou wants to be a doctor so bad you can feel it! You know she will truly be an amazing doctor if she ever gets the chance.

(sombody got mad about me saying that these were epic fails - which to me when I say epic fail I mean sometihng I (as in KARE) didn't like. It can go as far as not liking the 'villian' to sex scenes- so for the sake of that person I will call this section warnings)

Warnings:

I need to warn you about some stuff not that it really effects the plot but I think might be helpful in choosing this book. Though I love most of it I found that there were some things I didn't exactly like because of my personal beliefs. So please note:

1. The main character is a Lesbian. The description said nothing of it so I just wanted to let you know.
2. The Epilogue has a sex scene with her lover (so avoid the Epilogue if, like me, you'd rather not read about sex)

Overall:
I wouldn’t recommend this book because of my personal beliefs but if those things don't bother you then this is an amazing book!

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Here we go! I’m trying something new with my reviews. I love lists so I’ll be including a list of why I loved it (epic wins) and what I thought was odd or didn’t like (epic fail).

Description:

Magic is dangerous--but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Epic Wins:
  • The cover: it is beyond beautiful ( I mean just look at it)
  • Tessa: I loved her strength. The thing I loved most was, that despite the fact that few females in that time read books, that she was a book nerd (a level that I deeply connect with! who doesn't?)
  • London: The setting in my head was marvelous, cloudy and grey but always so beautiful.
  • The Shadowhunters world: I like how it was a different setting but the same magical world.
  • The ending: Probably the most epic of all endings. Can’t say much else, don’t want to spoil it.

Epic Fail:

The only thing I found that I didn’t like was the similarities between the characters in Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices. I matched up similar personalities and found a lot of similar characters. I really don’t consider this a bad thing necessarily, just weirdly familiar. Here is a list of who I put together (let me know if you think otherwise I would love to know who you think matches better)

ID Characters v.s. MI characters:
  • Will and Jace- They both have an arrogance about them, they act like they don’t care but underneath it all they do.
  • Tessa and Clary- Confused by this new world they have found. They both have unique gifts that introduce them to the Shadowhunters.
  • Jessamine and Izzy- They are both incredibly beautiful (well in the way the character talks of them they do). They seem to care about fashion (a little too much in my opinion :).
  •  Jem and Simon- When the main character needs them they are there. They give her advice and everything becomes clear when they are around. They deal with what problems they have in secret.
Like I said this is just more of an oddity that I noticed than an actual Fail!

Overall:

I loved this book it was so much better (in my small unimportant opinion) than City of Bones. I am now going to finish the MI books because of CA!

Waiting on Wednesday: Hope in Patience, The Replacements, and Pegasus

Hope in Patience by Beth Fehlbaum

Fifteen-year-old Ashley Asher has spent half of her life living in fear. Her stepfather has been sexually abusing her for years, but her mother doesn't believe her. After his latest assault lands her in the emergency room, Child Protective Services finally removes Ashley from her home, and sends her to live with the father she barely remembers and his new family. Her new life in Patience, Texas, is much better. She's in therapy to deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is trying to make her way in a new high school. She's getting used to living with her father, stepmother, and stepbrother, and she's made new friends in the summer course taught by her stepmother, Bev. She even joins the track team at the urging of her new African American friend, Z. Z. But Ashley is so traumatized by her past that she sometimes scratches herself until she bleeds and sleeps in her armoire, even though she knows she's safe now. Worse, when her stepfather is finally put on trial for hurting her, she learns that truth and justice don't always go together. Will Ashley adjust to a better life? Will she trust enough to date Josh, the cute guy on her track team who likes her? YA readers will be caught up in the heart-pounding story of a damaged girl trying to heal herself and get on with the rest of her life.

The Replacements by Brenna Yovannoff

Mackie Doyle seems like everyone else in the perfect little town of Gentry, but he is living with a fatal secret - he is a Replacement, left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now the creatures under the hill want him back, and Mackie must decide where he really belongs and what he really wants.

A month ago, Mackie might have told them to buzz off. But now, with a budding relationship with tough, wounded, beautiful Tate, Mackie has too much to lose. Will love finally make him worthy of the human world?

*I really love this cover (so creepy!) and of the reviews I have read it seems like a horror book, one of my favorite genres.Second I love that it is in a guys point of view, guys always have cool voices. Percy, Harry, and Sam (from linger) are all the best of examples.
Release date: September 21st

Pegasus by Robin McKinley

A gorgeously-written fantasy about the friendship between a princess and her pegasus

Because of a thousand-year-old alliance between humans and pegasi, Princess Sylviianel is ceremonially bound to Ebon, her own pegasus, on her twelfth birthday. The two species coexist peacefully, despite the language barriers separating them. Humans and pegasi both rely on specially-trained Speaker magicians as the only means of real communication.

But it’s different for Sylvi and Ebon. They can understand each other. They quickly grow close—so close that their bond becomes a threat to the status quo—and possibly to the future safety of their two nations.

* I love new and rarely used paranormal/fantasy concepts. Vamps and Werewolves are so over used its nice to see some fresh stuff coming out now!

Dear Followers,

What do you want from me? :)

FIRST:

I have been thinking about it, I mean really deeply, so I come to you for your opinion and what you would like to see! I have yet to 'rate' a book, I think it is wrong and most books I finish are a 5 if not better ( in my opinion). There are a couple things I could do:

 1) Continue doing review with out a rating system
 2) Come up with a lame rating system ( I really don't want to do this but I will if it will help YOU understand my love/hatred of the book)
 3) Do a pros v.s. cons ( this could be fun)

SECOND:

I want to do another contest (well not till December) but I am stumped on what to do. What books do you want? What is coming out before December that you really want to get your hands on? Suggestions would  just be lovely!

Just let me know what you want!

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Description:

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

My Thoughts:

I know you all are sick of me going on about how amazing Paranormalcy is. Unfortunately this review will be probably being the last thing I get to mention about the book because well it’s out and I’ve read it. :( This makes me really sad so I will make this the most inspirational review forcing everyone who read this post to drop what they are doing to go and buy the book.

If I rated this book, which I don't do, it would be infinity and beyond.(which is why I really shouldn't rate because all of them would be infinity and beyond)

How can I describe this book? Flat-out gripping will have to do. So I thought this book was the paranormal guy meets a human girl and they fall in love. I love that kind of story, so if that’s what it was I would have been content and happy. Thing is, it wasn’t like that at all. Sure there was the falling in love but there is more to it than that.

Evie is a paranormal butt-kicking bag and tagger, heroine extraordinaire. She works for IPCA an organization that controls the paranormals. They keep Evie around because she has a gift, she can see through paranormal glamour. Since she was eight she has worked for IPCA, never once has she doubted there intentions. That is until she catches Lend, a shape shifting hottie, breaking in to the center. Fascinated by his rare gift she can’t help but visit him. Slowly he opens her eyes so she can see clearly what is going on. It doesn’t help that something or someone is killing all the paranormals while the center is sitting doing nothing about it. Or that her ex is trying to capture her, and steal her heart, her soul while yet again they brush it off as nothing. Evie needs to figure out what and who she is before her world comes crashing down on her.

Kiersten White’s debut book literally consumed my every thought for the last couple of months and now that I have read it , it’s all I can do to not to think about it. Take flat-out gripping action, a witty spark of humor, a dash of a love, and some serious soul searching and you have capture Paranormalcy to a T. :)

A book worth the pain-staking wait, trust me I know. Please do yourself a favor and go buy it, if you haven’t already.

just sayin,
-Kare
