Wintertown by Steve Edmond

Description:

Every winter, straight-laced, Ivy League bound Evan looks forward to a visit from Lucy, a childhood pal who moved away after her parent's divorce. But when Lucy arrives this year, she's changed. The former "girl next door" now has chopped dyed black hair, a nose stud, and a scowl. But Evan knows that somewhere beneath the Goth, "Old Lucy" still exists, and he's determined to find her... even if it means pissing her off.

Garden State meets Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist in this funny and poignant illustrated novel about opposites who fall in love.

Epic Wins:
  • I am a huge fan of all the doodles and comic strips with in the story. Its sort of like a small break from reading and it helps you picture the people and places better.
  • This book gets a 6 out of 5 for humor on my imaginary, one time scale. Evan and Lucy are old friends and thus some of there dialogue is witty and uproariously funny.
  • Evan- He's funny, doodles a lot, and is smart. I rather like swimming through his mind.
  • Lucy- She has some problems she is trying to work out so it was amazing to see all the effort Even puts in to make her smile.
  • Their relationship is rocky at best but it's sweet and natural.
  • The setting- It was always showing these illustrations that gave the book a very wintry feel. I loved that it was pretty much always Christmas time and snowing.
  • The message- Everybody has there own journey to make it through, there own trials and choices, choices only they can make.
Epic Fails:
  • I get that Lucy was an emotional train wreck but why didn't she just tell him what was wrong?
Overall:
Another fabulously illustrated story about love, life, and doodles. Can't wait for what comes next from this author.

just sayin,
